ONEF, established in year 2000 as a voluntary Non – Governmental organization (NGO) with the mission to facilitate Education for all be it formal, in – formal and non – formal.
One of ONEF objectives is to reach out to both local and international Agencies with the view to collaborate with them in project initiating, planning and implementation in the areas affecting the undeserved (less priviledged).
In view of the above ORGANIZATION FOR NON-FORMAL EDUCATION
FOUNDATION (ONEF) in collaboration with IBEJI FOUNDATION conducted a research survey on the conditions and requirements of non – formal Education in Lagos metropolis and came up with report indicating Egbe Central mosque as one of the oldest building, housing Arabic school with about Sixty five (65) pupils and four (4) teachers. Ibeji foundation packaged a reconstruction of the mosque project. Considering the strategic location and the role it plays in Egbe and its Environment.
The mosque was established in the early twentieth century along Egbe-Idimu footpath which later became Liasu road. In 1976 a 3.6m wide laterite road was constructed from Isolo to Ikotun.
In 1978 the thatched roof old mosque was relocated to the present site 92 Isolo road Egbe under the late chief Imam; Alhaji Shehu Tijani Oreson Olorungbebe who died on Saturday 24th May 1980 by 10.00p.m and buried on Sunday 25th May 1980.
The present Imam Alhaji Daniyal Olusola Adisa Tijani Oresan was appointed as Chief Imam of Egbe and turbaned on 5th February 1994 by Muslim Progressive Union of chief Imams, Imam Ratibis and Alfas of ikeja division Lagos State. Mosque under Awori federation. It is undisputable fact that the Mosque became the second structure along the first Road in Egbe.
Egbe Central Mosque was constructed of mud walls and zinc roof with wooden rafters, doors and windows. The floor is of cement sand screed and the ceiling is of asbestos sheets.
The whole structure was painted with emulsion paints.
Egbe Central Mosque Muslim Community decided to reconstruct the mosque to enlarge the size and wear modern look. On 20th February 1992, the reconstruction started. The community erected three (3) sides’ walls with columns including ablution area and urinals.
3.2 tons of rods and ten (10) loads of gravels were purchased or procured to further the project.
Allah accepted the prayer of the community when Ibeji Foundation signified her intention to re-construct the mosque to a modern taste.
THE NEW EDIFICE
The present reconstruction started in January, 2011. The old mosque structure was demolished and the new project was set out with nine meters (9m) as minimum set back.
The foundation footing is 750mm below the natural ground level and the concrete ground floor slab is 750mm above the road level. The mosque head room is 3.3m. The square area of the mosque is about 146m2 while that of the toilet is about 33m. The inclusion of round arch doors and windows, curved minbar and tall minaret boost the mosque traditional outlook and easthetics.
The use of red aluminum roof with curved gutter fascial and tall minaret makes the mosque unique and a landmark in the whole community.
